Vote Yes for Jobs, Economic Development and the Future of OUR UCC.
Why is Umpqua Community College proposing a bond measure?
Umpqua Community College will request authorization from voters this May to finance $40 million in general obligation bonds to build a Allied Health & Science Training Center and an Industrial Arts & Technology Training Center on campus and to build a Regional Training Center near South Umpqua High School to greatly improve access to UCC education and training programs in South County.
The Time is Now
Facility and technological improvements are desperately needed to ensure students are being trained to meet the workforce needs of Douglas County businesses. Technology needed to train the workforce and prepare students for the future changes every five years. Yet UCC today training for nursing, allied health, science, automotive, welding and construction technology jobs are doing so in facilities built more than 40 years ago. These outdated environments are simply inadequate and must be upgraded.
Overcrowded classrooms
These new learning spaces will also alleviate overcrowding at UCC. Enrollment patterns have steadily grown since the mid-1990s when enrollment capacity was 7,000 students compared to nearly 14,000 students in spring term 2011. When the new facilities open, significant classroom and lab space will be vacated for repurposing.
